NFL Week 13 SNF Game Preview

Sunday Night Football features an AFC showdown that has plenty of playoff implications for both the 10-1 New England Patriots and the 7-4 Houston Texans. The Patriots sit atop the AFC East and can clinch a playoff spot with a win and losses or ties by either the Raiders or Steelers. The Texans are locked in a much more tense battle, leading the AFC South by only one game as the Titans and Colts sit at 6-5.

The Patriots are coming off of a scrappy 13-9 victory over the Cowboys, giving them their 17th consecutive 10-win season. New England’s offense struggled, only scoring one touchdown with Tom Brady throwing for fewer than 200 yards. The QB applauded rookie receivers N’Keal Harry, who scored the touchdown, and Jakobi Meyers, who had 74 receiving yards, saying, “They both came through with some big plays for us.” Brady has been working through some right elbow issues the past couple weeks, but has reported he feels “really good.” The rest of the team is also plagued by injuries, with 17 listed as questionable for the matchup vs. the Texans, including Stephon Gilmore, Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, and Phillip Dorsett.

The Texans celebrated a major win in Week 12 — a narrow 20-17 win over their division rivals, the Colts, where Deshaun Watson found DeAndre Hopkins in the end zone twice. In his first game back from injury, Will Fuller ran for 140 yards, with Hopkins saying, “[He] came back from injury, made plays for us when we needed him today, to have that 1-2 punch is awesome.” Despite the key victory over Indianapolis making Houston the clear favorites, the AFC South remains a three-team race, with Tennessee still playing the Texans twice and the Colts once more.

Fantasy Football Advice

According to Rotoworld’s Hayden Winks, Tom Brady remains a QB1/2 despite his 3.4% touchdown rate and 6.7 YPA being his worst since 2002. Sony Michel is an RB2/3 since he’s dependent on touchdowns as he’s losing a dozen or so snaps to Rex Burkhead, while James White (RB3) might be more involved this week as the Texans allow the most receptions to running backs. Julian Edelman remains a WR1 as he sees high-level usage and is tied for the second-most targets with 112. The Texans also have a QB1/2 in Deshaun Watson, who will be tested this week against a phenomenal Patriots defense, but his rushing production while trailing keeps him in the low-end QB1 mix. RB Carlos Hyde is a preferred sit this week against the No. 1 defense versus fantasy running backs. DeAndre Hopkins is downgraded to a WR2 as he’ll face the league’s best corner in Stephon Gilmore, but the receiver “should still see 8-12 targets and is capable of winning a few plays.”

Sunday Night Football Live Stream: Tonight’s “Sunday Night Football” game is a big one when it comes to the NFL playoff picture. In other words, this Week 13 matchup could become a playoff rematch in January. Historically speaking, that would be bad news for Houston, which has defeated New England just once since it became an expansion franchise in 2002.

Much of that has to do with the dominance of Tom Brady, and while the Patriots QB has not been as great on paper this season as usual, he typically handles the Texans with ease. In his past five games against Houston, Brady has 1,548 passing yards, 16 TDs and 2 INTs for a 119.9 rating.

Below is all the info you need to watch Patriots vs. Texans on Sunday night, including the TV channels and kickoff time.
Who plays on Sunday Night Football tonight?

Matchup: New England Patriots at Houston Texans
Kickoff time: 8:20 p.m. ET

In both our Week 13 NFL picks against the spread and straight-up predictions, Sporting News is projecting a Patriots victory over the Texans. Below are the explanations.

Pick against the spread: The Patriots are 10-1 against the Texans since the latter team entered the league in 2002. In four meetings since 2015, Bill Belichick’s team has beaten former New England offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien’s team five consecutive times with an average margin of victory of more than 15 points. Although the past two games have been closer because of Deshaun Watson, he has had issues with tougher defenses. Tom Brady has a much easier matchup against a reeling secondary, and with more trust in his remixed receivers, he’ll have a vintage game. Pick: Patriots win 31-20 and cover the spread.

Straight-up prediction: In some seasons, a game like this might be an upset alert, as the Patriots typically suffer a few losses that make observers doubt whether they’re true Super Bowl contenders. Yet New England is 10-1 thanks to its league-best scoring defense, a unit that is capable of containing MVP-caliber quarterbacks not named Lamar Jackson. Deshaun Watson will make his share of plays as usual; just not enough of them. Pick: Patriots 23, Texans 20.

Houston Texans vs New England Patriots

Houston Texans vs New England Patriots Live : NFL Week 13 Sunday Night Football features AFC East-leading New England visiting Houston, who is in first in the AFC South. The Patriots vs. Texans prime-time showdown kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, 2019, at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX.

Spread: Patriots -3.5 (+100) | Texans +3.5 (-120)

Moneyline: Patriots (-175) | Texans (+155)

Game Total: OVER 45 (-110) | UNDER 45 (-110)

Patriots’ Season to Date

Winning a defensive battle in miserable weather at Gillette Stadium, New England (10-1) defeated Dallas 13-9 last week. The Patriots struggled on offense, particularly in the passing game, for a third straight week. New England remains first overall in the AFC and has a two-game lead on Buffalo in the AFC East. Visitors for the third time in four weeks, the Patriots are 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS on the road this season.

Patriots’ Betting Record: ATS 7-4-0 OVER/UNDER 3-8-0

Patriots’ Leaders on Offense

QB Tom Brady: 2,942 pass yards with 15 TD and 5 INT

RB Sony Michel: 674 total yards with 6 TD

WR Julian Edelman: 809 receiving yards with 4 TD

TE Ben Watson: 124 receiving yards with 0 TD

Texans’ Season to Date

During a pivotal AFC South showdown, Houston (7-4) edged Indianapolis 20-17 at home last Thursday. It was a nice rebound after the Texans’ 41-7 Week 11 loss in Baltimore. Houston improved to 4-1 SU at home but the Texans are just 1-4 ATS as hosts. With WR Will Fuller back from injury, Houston is healthy on offense. To cover for their 20th ranked defense, the Texans will need all hands on deck on offense.

Texans’ Betting Record: ATS 5-6-0 OVER/UNDER 4-7-0

Texans’ Leaders on Offense

QB Deshaun Watson: 2,899 pass yards with 20 TD and 7 INT

RB Carlos Hyde: 858 total yards with 4 TD

WR DeAndre Hopkins: 839 receiving yards with 6 TD

TE Darren Fells: 287 receiving yards with 6 TD

Patriots vs. Texans Recent History Heavily Favors New England

Whether at home or away, in the regular season or the playoffs, New England has dominated Houston since the Texans joined the league is 2002. Just the 12th all-time meeting, the Patriots are 10-1 SU and 8-3 ATS versus the Texans. These two teams opened the 2018 NFL season against each other, and New England posted a 27-20 win at home as a 6.5-point favorite.

Texans vs. Patriots Final Thoughts and Pick

Houston has had extra time to rest and prepare for New England, but that is negated some by Texans coach Bill O’Brien being 0-5 against his mentor Bill Belichick. During those five games, which date back to 2015, the Patriots outscored the Texans by a 151-75 combined count. New England visits Houston for the first time since 2015 when it posted a 27-6 victory.

During his last three starts, Tom Brady has averaged just 230 pass yards with two TDs and one INT. The Patriots defense has allowed an NFL-low 10.6 PPG and should get some support from Brady here. After playing in miserable weather the last two weeks, the Pats’ offense will like the fast track at climate-controlled NRG Stadium. Lay the line and bet on New England.

Pick: Patriots -3.5

Season Record: 16-27

New England vs Houston – Game Preview
This should be a good one, a Sunday Night Football AFC battle worth watching between two divisional leaders, the 10-1 New England Patriots, and the 7-4 Houston Texans, with the AFC East’s Patriots comfortable with their playoff chances while the AFC South’s Texans are desperately squeezing onto theirs.

The Patriots beat the hit-or-miss Dallas Cowboys last week, but their offense didn’t look all that mighty doing it, the final score 13-9, resulting in questions surfacing about whether old GOAT Tom Brady still has “it” after his 17-of-37 performance for 190 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions for the win.

New England is coasting confidently towards the postseason while Houston is hanging on for dear life, so let’s take a quick look at how these two AFC rivals stack up against each other for their Week 13 Sunday Night Football confrontation.

For more on Week 13 check out our NFL Week 13 Power Rankings for a breakdown of each team’s performance over the past week.

The 10-1-0 New England Patriots
There are two ways to look at the 2019 New England Patriots right now – the first way involves questioning their offensive prowess since they have not been dominating games on that side of the ball as of late.

The second way takes its hat off to the Patriots’ defense that keeps shutting opponents down while Tom Brady slowly figures out who his current targets are (rookie N’Keal Harry? Newly acquired Mohamed Sanu? Definitely slot receiver Julian Edelman…) as the running game featuring Sony Michel and James White finally starts to get its footing.

These Patriots seem destined to play in yet another Super Bowl – they have the best defense in the league and they have GOATs, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, – and right now they look ready to go on the road (where they’re 5-1) to take on the Texans for (possibly) their eleventh win of the season.

For more on the Super Bowl check out our latest predictions on who will be the 2020 Super Bowl winner.

The 7-4-0 Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are coming off a close Week 12 home win against the divisional rival Indianapolis Colts by a score of 20-17 and have found victories in five of their last seven matchups, their record now 7-4 as they lead the AFC South.

But not by much – the Colts and the Tennessee Titans are just a win behind the Texans – so quarterback Deshaun Watson must figure out a way to lead his superior offense to a win over the Patriots’ superior defense, a matchup that should be a whole lot of fun to watch.

It’s going to be up to Houston’s defense to win this one – except their numbers aren’t that impressive right now and future Hall of Famer defensive end J.J. Watt is still out with an abdomen injury, so it will be up to emerging stars like linebacker Whitney Mercilus and strong safety Tashaun Gipson to step up and at least slow Brady’s offense down.

Patriots vs Texans History and Rivalry
These two AFC adversaries have met 11 total times (including 2 postseason games), with New England winning 10 of those times and Houston winning the other game.

The last time these two teams played was last season in September when the Texans traveled to Foxborough to get beaten by the Patriots by a touchdown, the final score 27-20.

If the Patriots win this matchup, they’ll move to 11-1-0 and stay high atop the AFC East as well as maintain their status as the leading candidate for the number one AFC playoff seed.

But if the Texans beat the odds and come out winners in this one, they’ll be 8-4-0 and stay ahead of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South and continue to stay in contention for the 3rd AFC playoff seed in the postseason.

Questions to Answer
Who’s favored to win this Week 13 Patriots-Texans matchup?

Which team has a better offense? Defense? Special teams?

Which team’s quarterback is more likely to lead his team to victory?

We’re going to briefly compare the Patriots and the Texans next and attempt to answer those questions and more.

Oakland Raiders vs Kansas City Chiefs

Oakland Raiders vs Kansas City Chiefs Live: The Oakland Raiders finished last season eight games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the battle for AFC West supremacy. As little as two months ago, it was hard to imagine them making any sort of challenge in their final season before moving out to Las Vegas.

Watch Live Streaming Online (free trail)

Yet here we are, five games left in the NFL season and the Raiders remain within striking distance. Tied for the final AFC Wild Card spot, an upset against the Chiefs on the road Sunday could suddenly put the division title back within reach. Injuries to Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill, inconsistent running back play and a leaky defense have left the Chiefs vulnerable. They already have as many losses (four) as they had during the entire 2018 regular season.

The Chiefs are seeking their first back-to-back wins since the first four games of the year. Ever since, they’ve gone 3-4 although every opponent that’s beaten them has a winning record. The comfy confines of Arrowhead Stadium, one of the sport’s best home-field advantages, has been wiped out with a gaudy 2-3 record. It’s already the most losses at home for them since 2013.

Will the Raiders take advantage of what seemed to be a near-impossible opportunity at the start of the year? Or will the Chiefs right the ship just in time to sail toward another AFC West division title? A victory here gives them the equivalent of a three-game lead with four games left to play.

Oakland at Kansas City

Kickoff: Sunday, Dec. 1 at 4:25 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Chiefs -11

Three Things to Watch

1. Is Patrick Mahomes back to 100 percent?

Oct. 17, the Chiefs feared the worst as Mahomes lay crumpled on the ground at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. Initially, a torn ACL was feared as Mahomes struggled to walk off under his own power. Further testing revealed a dislocated kneecap, an injury that typically takes around six weeks to heal.

Mahomes defied the odds, coming back in just three-and-a-half weeks while putting together a remarkable performance against the Titans. Passing for a season-high 446 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, he kept the Chiefs in the game until the defense ultimately let up in a 35-32 Titans upset. But you could tell, even with those gaudy numbers, the quarterback was less than 100 percent. Mahomes was less effective against the Chargers in Mexico City the following week, throwing for a season-low (besides the injury week) 182 yards, just one touchdown, and an interception. At least an ankle injury suffered in the season opener appeared ready to ease up; he ran for a season-high 59 yards on the ground.

Either way, it’s clear the bye week came at the perfect time to give Mahomes one last chance to rest before the stretch run. And what did we say about the kneecap? We’re right at the six-week timeline.

“I think he’s physically feeling better,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said during the bye. “He’s been kind of battling through the injury and I think starting kind of mid-week (last week), I mean, he was going, ‘Man, I’m feeling better here.”

So if Mahomes is back near 100 percent, laser-sharp throws combined with rushing speed the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player will wreak havoc. Favorite weapon Tyreek Hill is now healthy, too, recovered from a hamstring injury and that dynamic duo will be difficult for the Raiders to stop. Hill didn’t play against the Raiders earlier this year but posted a 67-yard touchdown catch in the 2018 season finale.

2. Was the Jets game just an aberration for the Raiders?

The Raiders, in position to tie the Chiefs atop the division last week, put together their worst performance of the year in losing to a 3-7 Jets team. They scored a season-low three points, shut out for the game’s first drive. Quarterback David Carr was pulled in the third quarter after throwing a pick-six that made the score a lopsided 34-3. The defense gave up 315 passing yards and let Jets signal-caller Sam Darnold, who was out with mono for most of the season, complete pretty much any pass he wanted.

“You ever been on a boat that’s sinking?” Head coach Jon Gruden said after the game. “It’s not happy. It’s not pleasant. It’s adversity. It’s football. You’ve got to respond to adversity.”

Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers

Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers: How to watch, listen and live stream …. The Broncos will take on the Chargers at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday at 2:25 p.m. MST.

Watch Live Streaming Online (free trail)

MATCHUP

The Broncos (3-8) are back at home after a two-game road trip, and the opportunity awaiting them is a good one, as Denver could get its first sweep of the Chargers (4-7) since 2015.

The Broncos are 40-18-1 all-time against the Chargers at home, and have a 66-52-1 overall record against Los Angeles. In the first game of the 2019 series, the Broncos jumped out to a 17-0 lead by halftime before the Chargers narrowed the deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter. But with some big runs from Phillip Lindsay late in the game, the Broncos were able to clinch their first victory of the year.

But this time, the Broncos will face a healthier Chargers team. Los Angeles’ two starting safeties, Derwin James and Adrian Phillips, missed the first game, but have been activated from injured reserve just in time for Sunday’s game. Regardless of whether Brandon Allen or Drew Lock starts, the Broncos’ quarterback must be aware of where those two players are at all times.

Denver, meanwhile, may be hobbled by injuries to significant players, including Von Miller and Alexander Johnson, who made a stellar starting debut against Los Angeles in Week 5. Both players were listed as questionable for Sunday’s game on the Friday injury report.

With Chargers QB Philip Rivers coming off one of the worst two-game skids of his career after throwing a combined seven interceptions to Oakland and Kansas City, the Broncos may need some help from the rest of the defense in case those two can’t play.
